Examples of Market Recalls due to Cases of Listeria Contamination

  • Dioxin contamination in poultry sector: In 1999, in Belgium, a dioxin contamination incident involving livestock feed led to the widespread recall of poultry products and their derivatives. This incident led to the destruction of millions of chickens and pigs, with estimated costs of around 625 million euros. 
  • Dioxin contamination incident in Germany: In 2011, in Germany, a dioxin contamination incident involving feed for chickens and pigs led to the recall of animal products from numerous livestock farms. This incident highlighted the importance of rigorous inspection protocols in the food supply chain to prevent the risk of contamination.
  • Bagged salad contamination incident: In September 2024, numerous batches of bagged iceberg salad were recalled from the market due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The products involved were sold in a number of different markets. 
  • Pre-sliced Aged Coppa: In September 2024, a batch of pre-sliced aged coppa was recalled due to suspected contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was sold in 90 g and 100 g packs. 
  • Fresh cage-free eggs: In August 2024, numerous batches of cage-free eggs were recalled over suspected contamination with Salmonella.
  • Noodle nests: In September 2024, a number of batches of S** W** branded noodle nests were recalled due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recall involved 250 g packs distributed through several supermarket chains.
